What is Esperanto?

(Find out more about Esperanto at Esperanto.net)

The world has a serious language problem. We have a solution which is easy, useful, and most importantly, fair.

EASY:
Remember spending years at school learning French or German or Spanish, and then not being able to use the language? Well, the good news is that ESPERANTO has only sixteen grammatical rules, and no exceptions! In fact, ESPERANTO is judged to be five times easier to learn than national languages. And what's more, people who learn ESPERANTO find that they can then learn other languages far more easily, because they understand how language works.

Learning ESPERANTO can even improve your English!

USEFUL:
ESPERANTO is spoken by millions of people all over the world, so you can meet people wherever you go without any language problem at all. And ESPERANTO speakers find that they get to know people from other countries far better using ESPERANTO than when they use English or another national language. Basically, when people with different first languages use ESPERANTO, they are on an equal footing.

Martin from London spent a month in Tanzania touring the country and staying with local ESPERANTO speakers. "My visit to Africa was the trip of a lifetime", he said. "I am convinced that I came to understand the culture and people more than other visitors because I used Esperanto. People in Tanzania don't speak English very well, so I felt that I could communicate on equal terms. Using Esperanto also helped me to find local contacts, so I made some lasting friendships.

Duncan from Glasgow went to an International Young ESPERANTO Conference in Russia and met young people from over 50 countries. "My time in St. Petersburg was amazing! There were people from all over the world, and no language problem at all! I now have lots of friends all over the world and I can stay with them on my travels.

FAIR:
It is not right to force other people to speak your language. That is why we propose ESPERANTO as a 'second language for all'; a language which people can easily learn, and use when other people don't speak the same national language.

ESPERANTO is also the ideal solution to the language problem in the European Parliament and the United Nations, where literally billions of pounds are spent on translation each year.

"SALUTON" MEANS "HELLO
The world is becoming a smaller and smaller place. It is now easier to travel across the world than ever before, and inventions like the telephone and the Internet let us send instant messages to nearly every country on earth.

However, although we can send messages, we often can't communicate. The different languages of the world are an enormous barrier to understanding other people and cultures.

ESPERANTO is the easy, useful and fair answer to the language problem. It is easy to learn, people have been using it for over a hundred years, and it avoids all the political problems of national languages when used for international communication.

There are millions of people around the world who use ESPERANTO all the time; why don't you join us?
